Talk about the calm before the storm!
There are a lot of crazy things to which we say ‘Only in Darwin!’ however for once I am directing it toward the weather.
Yesterday I wandered downstairs at 6.30am to pump out some laps in the pool before starting the day (Inspirational eh…..You would think I was an athlete! Until you saw me that is!)……anyways when I got to the pool I had never seen it flatter. You could have dropped a coin in there and watched the ripples like a millpond.
Following my swim in the time it took me to get in the lift at level 5 and return to level 19 all hell broke loose…..Darwin weather just turns that fast!
The wind ripping over my corner balcony was so intense that we had time to stack 8 chairs and drag the massive glass top table further into the corner to try to move it from the wind tunnel.
Fortunately the storm front hit us full on which caused me to lock the double glazed ‘cyclone proof’ sliding doors as not 2 minutes later the wind unceremoniously lifted a 40kg sheet of 3m x 1.5m safety glass straight out of the top of the table then smashed it into a million pieces against those same doors.
The table base (Weighted in the legs by sand) was then described as ‘looking like a magic carpet’ rising at one end, dipping then surging forward and careening off the 19th floor over the side never to be seen again! That thing weighed about 40Kg and had no large surfaces on it to catch the breeze…..I’d show you a picture but Hey it’s gone! So you will have to do with what was left afterwards below.
We raced to the window to see where it was going to land and luckily did not stick our heads over the edge as a balcony chair from level 24 would have knocked them off as it went whistling by!
10 minutes later and it’s all quiet with birds chirping in the sunshine half an hour after that…..You would think that meant the storm front was pretty harmless? 62mm of rain recorded and winds of 180kph…..not bad for a quick blow!
So if anyone has seen the table give me a call as I can arrange to collect it or alternately drop the chairs off for you!
